Thriving in a remote-first workplace
Remote work isn’t new anymore - it’s just how many of us work now. But being remote-first goes a step further. It’s not about occasionally working from home; it’s about building a team and culture that work from anywhere, by design.
At N.Rich, we’ve been remote-first for a while, and we’ve learned that it’s both freeing and challenging. It gives people space to live the life they want - but it also asks for a bit more intentionality to keep things running smoothly.
Why remote-first works so well
There’s a lot to love about this way of working:
- You can live where it feels right. Your career doesn’t have to dictate your postcode.
- You get your time back. No commute means more hours for family, hobbies, or just slowing down a bit.
- You save money without even trying. No daily transport, takeout lunches, or endless coffee runs.
- You control your environment. Whether it’s a tidy home office or a buzzing co-working space, you decide what helps you focus.
- You’re part of a global talent pool. You can work with brilliant people from all over the world - and for companies that value your skills, not your location.
But it’s not always easy
The freedom is amazing, but it can come with its own set of bumps in the road. Working remotely can feel lonely sometimes. The line between “work” and “life” can blur. And it’s easy to feel like you have to be always on to stay visible.
We’ve all been there - and that’s why, at N.Rich, we’ve put a few habits in place to make remote-first life a little smoother.
How we make it work at N.Rich
🌍 Working hours and availability
We’re fully remote, with teammates spread all around the world - and some always on the move. Trying to coordinate every time zone perfectly would be impossible, so instead, we focus on clarity.
Everyone is encouraged to take ownership of their own schedule:
- Talk with your manager about the hours that work for you.
- Add them to your calendar so it’s clear when you’re available.
- And when your day is done, really be done. Turn off Slack notifications - no one expects you to reply after hours.
This helps everyone manage their time without depending on others to remember who’s online when.
🗓️ Meetings that actually work
We also try to be mindful about meetings. Nobody needs an hour-long call that could’ve been 20 minutes.
Here’s what helps us:
- Set a clear goal and agenda before the meeting.
- Share pre-work or context in advance so we can get straight to the point.
- Only invite people who truly need to be there.
- Assign a note-taker so no one misses the key takeaways.
- Protect focus time - we block out no-meeting hours (and sometimes days) to give deep work the space it deserves.
These small adjustments make a big difference. Meetings become productive instead of draining, and people have time to actually get things done.
In a nutshell
Remote-first isn’t about working from the beach or never seeing your team again - it’s about designing a way of working that supports flexibility and focus, freedom and connection.
For us at N.Rich, it’s an ongoing practice: giving people trust, space, and structure to do their best work from wherever they are. It’s not perfect, but it’s ours - and we keep learning as we go.
